What are the steel grade in Japan? What’s the meaning?
Mar 15, 2018

In the steel grade of Japanese steel (JIS series) , general structural steel mainly consists of three parts:

The first part represents the material. For example: S (Steel) means steel, F(Ferrum) means iron.

The second part represents the different shape, variety, usage. For example: P(plate) means plate. T(tube),K(kogu) means tool.

The third part represents the characteristic numbers. It is generally the lowest tensile strength.

For example: ss400, the first “S” means steel (steel), the second “S” means structure (structure), 400 is normal structural steel with a lower strength of 400Mpa. Among them, SPHC – S is the abbreviation of steel, P is the abbreviation of plate, H is the abbreviation of heat, C is the abbreviation of commercial. Whole means hot rolled and steel strip.

SPHD – It means hot rolled steel and steel strip used for stamping.

SPHE – It means hot rolled steel and steel strip used for deep drawing.

SPCC – It means generally cold rolled carbon steel sheet and steel strip. It amount to Chinese steel grade Q195~215A. The third letter “C” is the abbreviation of cold. It add “T” at the end of steel grade if the tensile test should be guaranteed, it is SPCCT.

SPCD – It means cold rolled carbon steel and steel strip used for stamping. It amount to Chinese 08AL (13237) high quality carbon structural steel.

SPCE – It means cold rolled carbon steel sheet and steel strip used for deep drawing. t amount to Chinese 08AL (5213) drawing steel. It add “N” at the end of steel grade if the timeliness should be guaranteed, it is SPCEN.

Code name of cold rolled carbon steel sheet and steel strip. The annealing state is “A”. Standard hardening and tempering is “S”. 1/8 hardness is “8”. 1/4 hardness is “4”. 1/2 hardness is “2”.

Code name of surface working. Dull finish is “D”. Glossy finishing is “B”. For example: SPCCT – SD means hardening and tempering dull finish generally cold rolled carbon steel sheet and steel strip. Another example: SPCCT – SB means standard hardening and tempering, turned finish, cold rolled carbon steel sheet with guaranteed mechanical properties.
